Fathers.

Today is Father's Day, but I don't celebrate Father's Day. I haven't for a very long time.

I don't have a relationship with my own father. I was raised by my grandparents. My gramps passed away when I was a teen. So what influence of a father is from him. He was the second son of 13, born in the Mississippi Delta when everyone was literally dirt poor. He married my grandmother when they were barely teens and he enlisted in the military. He served in the Korean War and came home to raise 4 of his own, and then me.

Just a few days ago, I attended the funeral of his little brother, my great uncle Lenn. He was buried on the same date that my gramps passed away 24 years ago. So this father's day is hitting a little closer to home than others before.

He was tall and funny. He was serious and kind. He was a fighter and a softie. He was a quiet, laid back guy, but tough. I like to think he passed down some of these qualities to me. I miss him every day.
